ASD Global Symposium Brings Sports Dentistry Leaders Together in San DiegoThe ASD 43rd Sports Dentistry Global Symposium recently took place in San Diego, CA. Attendees came from throughout North America and several other countries. Several wonderful speakers spoke to an engaged crowd ranging from dental students to team dentists for various professional organizations. Topics included medical-dental integration in sports medicine, use of composite alloplast grafting materials, review of the newest AAE trauma guidelines, domestic abuse, implant reconstruction, TMJ injuries, and common analgesic and pain reliever impacts on athletic performance. The Recognition Lunch on Friday recognized Dr. Wayne Nakamura as the recipient of the Distinguished Member Award and two new Fellows were inducted, Dr. Julia Bronson and Dr. Anthony Moawad. The President's Award was presented to the ASD Executive Director, Dr. Vincent Mascia. Later that evening, the President's Reception and Auction celebrated our 2025–2026 President of ASD, Dr. Mike Salyzyn, who did an amazing job this year. The silent auction had several autographed memorabilia and other sports-related items. The live auction was a hit as usual, led by our auctioneer, Dr. Jan Chithalen. The money raised at the auction goes toward the Research and Education Fund, which awards grants and prizes to students for their research in sports dentistry. This year, there were six poster presentations submitted, with First Place being awarded to Dr. Erik-Masao Boller of Tokyo Dental College and Second Place awarded to Kofi Darkwa, a dental student at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry. In attendance as special guests at the reception were Andreea Ghizila, a US Sprint Canoe national team member, and Markus Edegran, a 2024 Olympian and member of the US Sailing Team. San Diego was a beautiful city for the meeting with unrivaled weather and outdoor activities. Do not miss next year's meeting in Raleigh, North Carolina, in June 2027, home of the 2026 Stanley Cup Champions, the Carolina Hurricanes, whose team dentist is ASD member Dr. Don Lane. His Hurricanes edged out the Las Vegas Knights, whose team dentist is ASD past president Dr. Byron Blasco.
